A number of intergepted letters clearly show the
sympathy which is still felt by certain suppliers in Manchester, Bradford and elsewhere for their German correspondents in the Fast. These letters are not only from firms of German origin
and with German names, but have also come from well known
British firms.
The following extract from a letter dated Manchester 17th. November 1914 written by a leading British exporter ad- dressed to the liquidators of Siemssen & Co. is a sample of
some of this eorrespondence.
"We trust the bill will be taken up exactly as
"if Messrs. Siemssen & Co. were still working the
"business, and it would be a source of satisfaction
"to us to hear that the British Authorities had
"decided to withdraw the order of liquidation and "permit our friends to continue their business in "the same manner that it has hitherto been conducted".
The only hope we can have of, in part at all events, recovering the enormous losses entailed by the War forced upon us by Germany is by seizing her Colonies and securing as much as possible of her overseas trade, but our efforts in the second direction will be largely counteracted if British subjects both here and at home for the sake of temporary gain, lend themselves to keeping alive German interests during the continuance of the war.
These are
As regards the liquidation of the losal German firms,
stocks of piece goods, etc. still on hand in the Colony are estimated at between four and five million dollarE,
The goods fairly evenly divided between about eight firms. are largely drawn against, the largest ereditor it is under-
stood being the Hongkong & Shanghai Bank.
It is improbable that the whole of these goods can
be disposed of much under another twelve months.
